Until 3 years ago, I had been a chain smoker for 16 years.
I started smoking when I was 20. At first, I was smoking a few cigarettes a day. Within a few months, that went up to 20 a day. Within a year I was smoking 60 cigarettes a day on average.
For the first few years, I didn’t think much about it. I was young and I thought I could quit whenever I wanted. After all, I had a good level of self-control and willpower. I wasn’t like the other smokers.
After I had my college degree, I started working. It was a 9-5 boring office job. Within a few months of working at the office, I started gaining fat. I was never out of shape before. The solution was easy. I would join a gym, exercise and the fat would melt off.
Gym Disaster and First Attempt to Quit Smoking
I joined the gym and went for a training. Within the first minute of training, I was out of breath. Heavy smoking had started to take its toll on me.
I did fairly better as I trained more but I got nowhere near where I wanted to be. So, I decided to quit smoking. I quit cold turkey.
I didn’t smoke for about a week. That was the most torturous week of my life. Every second I was awake, I thought of cigarettes. I even smoked in my dreams.
Instead of enduring that horrible torture, I surrendered to smoking again. What I thought would be easy, wasn’t easy at all.
I got mad at myself. I felt weak, helpless and defeated.
Nothing could stop me from smoking. I was aware of the health dangers. I was scared of dying young. Smoking laws were getting more strict. Smokers were ashamed, bullied and harassed. We were treated as second-class citizens.
I knew that my house, my car, and my clothes smelled bad. I knew I had yellow teeth. I was falling short of breath quickly-even with small activities like walking.
I endured all of these for my beloved cigarette.
Other Quitting Attempts
When I heard of Allen Carr’s book ‘The Easy Way To Stop Smoking’’, I was hopeful. I read and liked the book. But it didn’t work for me.
One of my friends suggested I see a hypnotherapist. He had another chain smoker friend who quit after a session of hypnotherapy.
I booked a session and went through an hour of hypnotherapy. The hypnotherapist said our session was successful and I was smoke-free for the rest of my life. I lit a cigarette when I was 100 meters away from his office.
Nothing worked. Quitting was too tough and torturous, so I quietly accepted that I will be smoking for the rest of my life.
I would always be miserable, desperate and dissatisfied. The quality of my day to day life already sucked and I was scared to die young because of a heart attack or lung cancer.
One day, I was browsing the internet at the office.
One of my favorite writers had written an article about e-cigarettes. He was saying that he quit smoking with an e-cigarette.
I was intrigued. I had heard of e-cigarettes before but I also heard that they were just as harmful as cigarettes, difficult to use and ineffective at quitting smoking.
The writer didn’t agree. He said he was healthier and happier with his e-cigarette, it is easy to use and he completely quit smoking real cigarettes.
I was excited. I did a comprehensive research about e-cigarettes.
What I learned shocked me-in a good way.
Research clearly showed that e-cigarettes are not dangerous at all like the mainstream media paints them to be.
I ordered exactly the same model of e-cigarette which helped the writer quit- with 2 bottles of e-cigarette juice.
I started waiting for my order to arrive. I waited for it like a kid waiting for Christmas. At the same time, I was scared.
This was my last chance to quit smoking. I had tried everything else. What if it didn’t work?
When my order arrived. I was at work. I opened the box. There stood my e-cigarette. It looked so elegant and beautiful. I was worried that it would be difficult to set it up but it was easy. I set it up and put the e-juice inside the tank all within a minute. My e-cigarette was ready for use.
I took a puff. The puff that changed my life. I inhaled the vapor and blew it out of my lungs. It tasted better and richer than a real cigarette. Its vapor looked like cigarette smoke but it was not smoke. It was just vapor. It didn’t hurt my lungs and choke me like cigarette smoke either. I knew I had a winner.
That day I quit smoking. My life completely turned around. That day was the first day of my remaining healthy life.
A new life
Within just a week, I started seeing major changes. My resting heart rate decreased by 20% (which was around 120 while I was smoking). I started waking up with more energy. My house, my car, and my clothes didn’t stink anymore.
I won my social life back. I started training again and I got better with every session. I wasn’t short of breath anymore. My teeth got whiter. No more cigarette stains.
My headaches ended. I used to spend a lot of money on cigarettes. E-cigarette and e-juice were much cheaper. My money stayed in my pocket.
I didn’t suffer any void, depression, withdrawal symptoms-unlike my previous quitting attempts.
I didn’t need any willpower whatsoever. I quit smoking immediately and easily.
I become a hero at the office
A total of 25 other co-workers who smoked, bought e-cigarettes after they have seen it work for me.
Most of them were able to quit smoking. Even the ones who didn’t quit, cut down to 1-2 cigarettes a day.
They thanked me for changing their lives.
How Does an E-Cigarette Work? Is it difficult to use?
It’s a great idea to start with a good quality starter kit. A good e-cigarette starter kit looks like this:
There are a battery, a tank, and a mouthpiece. All of these come within the same box.
E-Cigarettes need e-juice to work. E-juice is not included in your e-cigarette kit. You need to buy it separately.
After you take your e-cigarette out of its box, all you have to do is put the e-juice in the tank and connect the parts. It takes less than a minute for the first setup, then you will be able to set it up within seconds after the first setup. That’s playschool stuff.
Don’t worry about all different kinds of e-cigarettes. Don’t let them confuse you. They all work with the same principles. There are thousands of different brands of cigarettes and lighters but you are not confused about them, right? They all work the same. There’s nothing to be confused about.
E-cigarettes are the same. Like you buy a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, in the case of e-cigarettes you buy an e-cigarette and an e-juice. That’s all. Sure, there are advanced models where you can adjust the vapor level, voltage etc. but don’t let that intimidate you. You don’t need a complicated e-cigarette model to quit smoking.
E-Cigarette (vaping) delivers you the nicotine in the e-juice. Nicotine is why you are addicted to cigarettes. Vaping does the job of delivering you the nicotine you need-without the unnecessary tar and carbon monoxide in the cigarette smoke.
With vaping, you access all the positive aspects of smoking, avoiding the negative effects.
Taking care of your nicotine fix is not the only goal that vaping accomplishes. It also mimics the behavioral aspects of smoking which I believe are as important as nicotine addiction.
Don’t believe the scaremongering on mainstream media about e-cigarettes. Evidence and research say that vaping is -at least- 95% less harmful than smoking.
My reading of the evidence is that smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks smoking poses to their health.
-Professor Peter Hajek, Queen Mary University London
Let’s look at what experts, real-world data, and research say about the health aspects of vaping.
The first research we will review is named Safety evaluation and risk assessment of electronic cigarettes as tobacco cigarette substitutes: a systematic review.
Here’s the conclusion of the research:
Existing evidence indicates that e-cigarette use is by far a less harmful alternative to smoking. There is no tobacco and no combustion involved in e-cigarette use; therefore, regular vapers may avoid several harmful toxic chemicals that are typically present in the smoke of tobacco cigarettes. Indeed, some toxic chemicals are released in the e-cigarette vapor as well, but their levels are substantially lower compared with tobacco smoke, and in some cases (such as nitrosamines) are comparable with the amounts found in pharmaceutical nicotine products. Surveys, clinical, chemistry and toxicology data have often been mispresented or misinterpreted by health authorities and tobacco regulators, in such a way that the potential for harmful consequences of e-cigarette use has been largely exaggerated.
According to a 19 August 2015 report published by Public Health England (English Government Agency), vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking.
The current best estimate is that e-cigarettes are around 95% less harmful than smoking.
Does Vaping Raise Blood Pressure?
Since this article is intended for smokers, the answer is a NO. Actually, it is the opposite.
A study, published in Internal and Emergency Medicine journal, discovered that smokers with hypertension significantly lowered their blood pressure by switching to e-cigarettes.
Conclusion: Smokers who reduce or quit smoking by using e-cigarettes may lower their systolic blood pressure in the long term, and this reduction is particularly apparent in smokers with an elevated blood pressure. By showing blood pressure reductions when reducing or stopping smoking for a sufficient period of time, this study adds to the current evidence that e-cigarette use appears to be a less harmful alternative to tobacco smoking.
Does Vaping Cause Cancer?
The main function of e-cigarettes is delivering nicotine to your body. According to World Health Organization (WHO), nicotine is not a carcinogen.
Nicotine is the addictive component of tobacco. Nicotine itself is not a carcinogen
The Public Health England report, states that particles in e-cigarette juice other than nicotine did not carry any health risks.
The reality is, if you quit smoking and switch to vaping, you will get rid of all the carcinogens in the cigarette smoke.
Can Vaping Cause Nicotine Poisoning?
According to the same report, e-cigarettes used as intended poses no risk of nicotine poisoning to users.
When used as intended, e-cigarettes pose no risk of nicotine poisoning to users, but e-liquids should be in ‘childproof’ packaging. The accuracy of nicotine content labeling currently raises no major concerns.
Is Vaping A Gateway to Smoking?
Fears that e-cigarettes have made smoking seem normal again or even led to people taking up tobacco smoking are not so far being realized based on the evidence assessed by this important independent review. In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco.
–Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK’s expert in cancer prevention
Look at what the aforementioned Public Health England report says about the gateway theory:
Since e-cigarettes were introduced to the market, smoking prevalence among adults and youth has declined. Hence there is no evidence to date that e-cigarettes are renormalising smoking, instead it’s possible that their presence has contributed to further declines in smoking, or denormalisation of smoking. The gateway theory is ill defined and we suggest its use be abandoned until it is clear how it can be tested in this field. Whilst never smokers are experimenting with e-cigarettes, the vast majority of youth who regularly use e-cigarettes are smokers. Regular e-cigarette use in youth is rare.
Do E-Cigarettes Explode?
E-Cigarettes have similar batteries to smartphones and other similar electrical products you use.
Just use the e-cigarettes as intended and follow the basic safety instructions and you will be fine. Here’s what Public Health England report says about this:
A number of news articles report the risk of fire and explosions from e-cigarettes. These reports suggest that faulty or incompatible chargers are the main causes of e-cigarette related fires along with faults relating to lithium batteries.
These risks appear to be comparable to similar electrical goods.
Regulations covering chargers and quality standards of production could help reduce the risk of fire and explosion in e-cigarettes.
Does Vaping Cause Popcorn Lungs?
This is another scaremongering by the mainstream media.
Like every other thing that comes from the mainstream media, this scare is deceptive. Here’s an excellent article dispelling this myth.
Will You Gain Weight If You Quit Smoking And Switch To Vaping?
The real reason people gain weight after they quit smoking is that they replace the cigarette with food. Here, you will replace the cigarette with the e-cigarette, so it’s unlikely that you will gain weight.
In fact, since you will have more exercise capacity, there is a good chance that you will lose weight by exercising more.
Will Vaping Satisfy Your Need To Smoke?
This is a very good question and I am happy that you asked.
There are 2 things to consider when you decide to switch to vaping from smoking.
- E-Juice nicotine level: The juice you choose must be higher in nicotine. I see that people make the mistake of going for low-level nicotine e-juice. This is because they are scared of nicotine poisoning. This is complete nonsense. Don’t be afraid of nicotine poisoning. You will not get nicotine poisoning from an e-juice unless you inject it directly into your veins with a needle.
- E-Cigarette model: You must choose a good quality model from an established brand that produces a strong vapor. Don’t worry, they are not expensive.
Will Vaping Harm Your Loved Ones?
Let’s visit the Public Health England report once again:
E-Cigarette use releases negligible levels of nicotine into ambient air with no identified health risks to bystanders.
This is another good question and the answer is a YES.
This article is about how I quit smoking with e-cigarettes but I’m only one person. What does the evidence say about the smokers who try to replace smoking with e-cigarettes?
The entire point of e-cigarettes is to quit smoking. So I wrote another article on this subject, covering the research and evidence.
There is no evidence that e-cigarettes are undermining England’s falling smoking rates. Instead the evidence consistently finds that e-cigarettes are another tool for stopping smoking and in my view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely.
E-cigarettes could be a game changer in public health in particular by reducing the enormous health inequalities caused by smoking.
– Professor Ann McNeill, King’s College London
Are E-Cigarettes Expensive?
In my experience, e-cigarettes cost a lot less than smoking. I smoked 3 packs (60 cigarettes) a day of Marlboro so my smoking expenses were high.
Let’s look at some real-world data.
Let’s say you smoke one pack of Marlboro a day. Your monthly cost will be: 30*6.5 = $195.
One good quality e-cigarette starter kit will cost you about $25.
If you smoke one pack a day and switch to e-cigarettes, a 30ml bottle costing around $20, will last you about 3 weeks. Let’s be generous and say you’ll consume 2 bottles in a month. Your total cost of e-juice will be 2*$20=$40.
Your total cost of smoking for a month: $195.00
Your total cost of vaping for a month: $65
Your e-cigarette will last a lot longer than a month but for the sake of simplicity, I included the whole cost in one month.
Even if you buy a new e-cigarette every month, you will still save $130 a month, $1560 a year.
Of course, this example assumes that you live in the USA, smoke one pack of Marlboro cigarettes a day and use a basic e-cigarette and e-juice. Cost can change according to these variables so do the math. E-cigarettes are a lot cheaper in my experience.
I believe it wasn’t luck I read that small piece of article about e-cigarettes which in turn made me quit smoking. It was selective perception.
I believe that you are reading this article because you had enough awareness in the back of your mind that you selectively chose this article to read, instead of millions of other articles on the internet.
Your subconscious brain already showed you the way to your escape from the hell called smoking.
I urge you to act on it now and buy an e-cigarette (with a bottle of e-juice). While I can’t guarantee that you will stop smoking forever, the electronic cigarettes can make a difference. There is very little to lose, but your life to gain.
A decision to give it a shot may save your lungs, heart, veins and as a whole your health.
Act today because every single cigarette you smoke is stealing another day from your precious life.
