Dangers of vaping are hugely exaggerated.
After I debunked all the myths about the health risks of vaping, it’s time to discuss how you can successfully quit smoking and switch to vaping.
Many smokers fear that vaping might not satisfy their desire to smoke enough.
I will show you real-world data about vaping and its effects on quitting smoking.
After you finish reading this article, you will know how to maximize your chance of quitting smoking with e-cigarettes. Don’t worry. There is nothing complicated. Just read on.
What Does Research Say?
Previously I told you how I quit smoking and switched to vaping. I am only one person. What about other smokers? Let’s look at some research.
There are countless studies about the effectiveness of vaping for quitting smoking. I’ve carefully selected the most important ones for you. Because, the results of these comprehensive studies will increase your odds of success for quitting smoking with e-cigarettes.
Research No 1:
The first study we will visit is published on 29 October 2014 by International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health entitled Effectiveness of the Electronic Cigarette: An Eight-Week Flemish Study with Six-Month Follow-up on Smoking Reduction, Craving and Experienced Benefits and Complaints.
The study found that e-cigarettes are highly and immediately effective in quitting or at least cutting down smoking with no withdrawal symptoms:
Conclusion: In a series of controlled lab sessions with e-cig naïve tobacco smokers, second generation e-cigs were shown to be immediately and highly effective in reducing abstinence induced cigarette craving and withdrawal symptoms. Remarkable (>50 pc) eight-month reductions in, or complete abstinence from tobacco smoking was achieved with the e-cig in almost half (44%) of the participants.
Note the use of “second generation e-cigs”. I will visit that later in this article. So, keep on reading.
Research No 2:
Another study we will see is published on 25 November 2014 by American Heart Association entitled Electronic Cigarettes Are Effective for Smoking Cessation: Evidence From a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Here’s the conclusion of the study:
Use of such e-cigarettes was positively associated with smoking cessation. Nicotine filled e-cigarettes were more effective in achieving cessation compared to those without nicotine
On the previous study, we learned that the type of e-cigarette you use is important if you want to successfully quit smoking by switching to vaping. This study makes another point. The amount of nicotine in the e-juice is also a determinant of your success. We will visit both points later in the article. So, keep on reading.
Research No 3:
The third study we will review is a survey published in American Journal of Preventive Medicine with the title Electronic Cigarettes As a Smoking-Cessation Tool.
Here’s the result of the study:
The primary finding was that the 6-month point prevalence of smoking abstinence among the e-cigarette users in the sample was 31.0% (95% CI=24.8%, 37.2%). A large percentage of respondents reported a reduction in the number of cigarettes they smoked (66.8%) and almost half reported abstinence from smoking for a period of time (48.8%). Those respondents using e-cigarettes more than 20 times per day had a quit rate of 70.0%. Of respondents who were not smoking at 6 months, 34.3% were not using e-cigarettes or any nicotine-containing products at the time.
The most important thing we learned from this study is, quit rates skyrocket to 70% if you use your e-cigarette more than 20 times a day. This information will be extremely helpful for your success. Let’s go on.
Research No 4:
Last, we will revisit the 19 August 2015 report by Public Health England.
This report reviews numerous studies about e-cigarettes and draws important conclusions. I carefully analyzed the report and picked the most important parts for the purposes of this article:
O’Brien et al., 2015 conducted a secondary analysis of the RCT data from Bullen et al., 2013 to examine the effectiveness of E-Cigarettes (EC) with and without nicotine compared to the nicotine patch. Participants allocated to 16mg EC showed greater smoking reduction than those allocated to patch
A recent Cochrane Review of these RCTs concluded that they demonstrated that EC with nicotine help smokers reduce their cigarette consumption and stop smoking compared with no nicotine EC (placebo).
These two findings tell us that e-juices with nicotine are more effective at quitting smoking. So, if you want to quit smoking, you should choose an e-juice with nicotine.
Polosa et al., 2014 conducted a six-month pilot study of tank-type EC users with no control group among 72 smokers who did not want to quit (smokers were enrolled after rejecting participation in smoking cessation program at a hospital). At six months, they found significant 50% and 80% reductions in cigarette consumption, and a quit rate of 36%
There are limitations with these studies. For example, an unavoidable methodological problem is that only people who currently smoke are included in these studies meaning that smokers who switched completely to E-Cigarette and stopped smoking are excluded.
This part tells us that e-cigarettes are effective for quitting smoking and if we include the smokers who already switched to vaping, we would find that e-cigarettes are even more effective for quitting smoking than these studies found. Also, note that they used tank-type e-cigarettes for the study. This is another good point which I will visit later.
E-liquid normally comes in 10ml bottles containing up to 360mg of nicotine. This poses no risk to vapers if used as intended.
EC release negligible levels of nicotine into ambient air with no identified health risks to bystanders.
‘Ready-made’ e-liquids come in strengths of up to 36mg/ml nicotine, with the highest concentration recorded of 36.6mg/ml. This poses no risk of nicotine poisoning if used as intended. An overenthusiastic vaper, like someone who is over-smoking, receives a reliable warning via nausea. If the 10ml bottle of e-liquid was drunk, it would cause nausea and vomiting but would be unlikely to inflict serious harm. To protect young children from accidental exposure though, e-liquids should be in ‘childproof’ packaging.
This part is extremely important because this is one of the reasons people fail to quit smoking when they switch to e-cigarettes.
They think e-juices with a high level of nicotine will somehow cause them harm or nicotine poisoning. So they choose an e-juice with a low level of nicotine and that doesn’t satisfy their need to smoke.
Just because of this reason, they fail to quit smoking and blame e-cigarettes for being not effective.
The truth is, even if you choose e-juice with the highest level of nicotine, there is no risk of nicotine poisoning for you.
Although E-Cigarette (EC) technology is developing to maximize nicotine delivery, a vaper seeking high blood nicotine levels is likely to struggle to achieve them with a weak e-liquid.
These findings have an important implication. Above the necessary minimum level of nicotine, nicotine concentrations in e-liquid and even the concentrations in vapour, if measured by standard puffing schedules, are of limited relevance. For light smokers, 18mg/ml ‘mild’ e-liquid may be sufficient, but they may also prefer a stronger liquid and take shorter and less frequent puffs. A heavy smoker who would be expected to prefer a 28mg/ml ‘strong’ liquid may in fact chose a ‘moderate’ strength if they favour long and frequent puffs.
If you want to quit smoking with an e-cigarette, don’t choose a low nicotine (weak) e-juice.
You Learned The Most Important Points
Throughout this article, you learned 5 crucial points.
- Vaping is very effective for quitting smoking.
- The type of e-cigarette you use is an important determinant of your success at quitting smoking.
- The amount of nicotine in the e-juice is another determinant of your success.
- The more frequently you use your e-cigarette, the greater your odds of successfully quitting smoking.
- An e-juice with a high level of nicotine will not harm you or the people around you.
Another point I may add is, a good e-cigarette must be easy to use.
If you want to maximize your odds of success for quitting smoking you should choose:
- a solid tank-type e-cigarette model with a long-lasting battery
- an e-juice containing a higher level of nicotine.
None of these are expensive. In fact, you will probably find that it’s a lot cheaper than smoking.
Just follow these simple guidelines and you will greatly increase your odds of successfully quitting smoking by switching to vaping.
